OBSTETRICS/GYNECOLOGY (OB/GYN) Medical Experts

Obstetrics and Gynecology (often abbreviated to OB/GYN) is a single medical speciality and the two components have a combined postgraduate training program. In the United States, OB/GYN specialists require four years of medical school followed by four years in residency. Some generalists work as obstetricians, mainly in rural areas. All gynecologists, therefore, are trained obstetricians, and vice versa. However, some doctors drop their obstetric practice, especially as they get older. This is often due to the double burden of very late hours and, depending on the location, high rates of litigation.

Obstetrics is the surgical specialty dealing with the care of a woman and her offspring during pregnancy, childbirth and the period shortly after birth. Obstetricians work to ensure that pregnancy results in the delivery of a healthy baby, without impairing the health of the mother. The OB/GYN initially evaluates the mother's medical history and health status.  Their physical examination discloses the mother's uterine size and estimates the length of her pregnancy. If the obstetrician detects abnormalities, prenatal testing may need to be done on the fetus. An important modern development has been ultrasonography, which allows the obstetrician to non-invasively diagnose intra-uterine conditions. In supervising delivery, OB/GYN’s use the Friedman's chart, which shows the patterns of cervical dilation.

Gynecology (sometimes Gynaecology) is the specialty of diseases of the female reproductive system (uterus, vagina, and ovaries). Almost all modern gynecologists are also obstetricians.

Medical Opinions Associates has many Board-certifed OB/GYN’s who review medical records and provide on-going litigation support to attorneys and insurers.  Sometimes the OB/GYN medical expert is also a specialist in Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility.  Medical Opinions Associates’ OB/GYN’s have such additional expertise and they also have advanced learning in areas such as advanced laparoscopic Gyn surgery, including Urogynecology.  Some have achieved expertise in the use of oral contraceptives and hormone replacement.  We have specialists in Sexually-Transmitted Diseases (STD’s), including genital ulcers, genital herpes, and vaginitis.  Our physicians have special expertise in abnormal uterine bleeding, Postmenopausal Oteoporosis, Menopausal Management, and Cervical Dysplasia Screening.  There are also OB/GYN experts available in related areas such as high-risk obstetrics, antepartum testing, colposcopy, laser surgery, obstetric and gynecology sonography
