Neurology Medical Experts

Neurology is a branch of medicine dealing with disorders of the nervous system, and is a sub-specialty of Internal Medicine.  Neurological disorders are disorders that affect the central nervous system (brain, brainstem and cerebellum), the peripheral nervous system (peripheral nerves - cranial nerves included), or the autonomic nervous system (parts of which are located in both central and peripheral nervous system). To be Board-certified in neurology, a physician must first be Board-certified in Internal Medicine.  All Medical Opinions’ medical expert neurologists are Board-certified in their specialty. The neurological diseases that are the primary domain of neurologists are:

• demyelinating diseases of the central nervous system.
• the epilepsies
• headache and migraine
• movement disorders
• polyneuropathies
• spinal cord disorders
• genetic diseases with a primarily neurologic manifestation

There is a close association between the specialties of Neurology and Psychiatry.  Many mental illnesses are thought to be neurological disorders affecting the central nervous system. These afflictions are classified separately and treated by psychiatrists.  There are indications that neuro-chemical mechanisms play important parts in the development of diseases ilke bipolar disorders and schizophrenia. Also, the so-called neurological diseases often have psychiatric manifestations such as post-stroke depression, depression and dementia associated with Parkinson’s disease, and mood and cognitive dysfunctions in Alzheimer’s disease.

One of Medical Opinions’ neurology experts also specializes in Pediatric Clinical Neurology, Eletroencephalopathy (EEG), and evoked potentials (electrical signals elicited by stimulation of sensory organs or nervous tissue). He also serves on several executive committees of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society.  Another neurology expert has accompanying certifications from the American Academy of Pain Management and the American Society of Neuro-Imaging.  A third neurologist on our panel  cites expertise in spinal injury, traumatic brain injury, post-traumatic seizures, and headache disorders, among others.
